Can I add smartphone apps to any Mazda vehicle?

A few months ago, Mazda announced that it would be providing owners of certain trims of the 2018 Mazda6, the chance to have Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ capability retrofitted in their vehicles. Naturally, we and many of our customers were very excited to hear this news. However, the team of product experts working in the Gorman McCracken Mazda showroom started to receive a lot of calls, text messages and emails from other customers wondering, ‘Can I add smartphone apps to any Mazda vehicle?’ As of a few days ago, we can start calling them back with good news. The automaker has decided to expand the technologies availability to almost every one of its vehicles that are from 2014 and newer.

Is the new Mazda update free?

Everyone around the showroom was a little surprised when Mazda announced it was going to offer to upgrade the infotainment system of the 2018 Mazda6 (Touring trim and above) for free. So, when we saw that the manufacturer was going to open up the program to more models from more production years, we were hopeful the same benefit would carry over. Alas, that is not the case.

Customers who would like to add the new smartphone integration capability to their vehicle (that is not the 2018 Mazda6) will be charged $199 plus the cost of labor.

Which vehicles are eligible?

For the most part, Touring and higher trims of the 2018 Mazda3, as well as the 2019 models of the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-9, will already come with two suites of applications. However, the necessary software and hardware updates can be purchased for the entry-level Sport trim of each model. If you purchased any trim of the 2018 Mazda3, you will be charged for the upgrade.

What about older vehicles?

This is actually the best part of the whole program. Almost any Mazda vehicle that is already equipped with the MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system will be able to access Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™. Owners will just need to pay the aforementioned fee.
