Mazda kicks off successful anniversary celebration in Chicago

To say the automotive industry has had a positive reaction to the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Mazda MX-5 Miata would be an understatement. Since the limited-run version of the Mazda convertible was officially unveiled at the media-only portion of the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, we’ve been getting a lot of calls from people wondering, ‘Can I order the Mazda MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition?’ Unfortunately, as quickly as those calls came into the Gorman McCracken Mazda showroom, even more calls flooded the North American headquarters of Mazda. In a matter of hours, all 500 special-edition Mazda MX-5 Miata vehicles available for pre-order had been reserved. However, more will be available eventually. This isn’t the first time the automaker has seen such a response to its convertible.

In the first 15 minutes after the presentation showing the Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition, some 20 percent of the international allotment was spoken for.

In 1999 when the automaker was commemorating the 10th anniversary of the convertible, all 7,500 of the globally available models were sold. The same was true 15 years later when Mazda was marking the two-door coupe’s silver anniversary.

“Our Miata fans are truly remarkable,” President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, Masahiro Moto said in a press release. “We are humbled by their devotion to our joyful roadster.”

Why is it so special?

Mazda is making a total of 3,000 units of the Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition. The biggest visual difference the new Racing Orange exterior paint scheme. On the inside, the convertible will be available with special performance-themed features like RECARO seats as well as some new technology. Future owners of the limited-edition convertible will also be able to use their Apple and Android smartphones with its upgraded infotainment system.
