The City-Sized Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 may be a subcompact vehicle, but you will forget that size designation as soon as you get inside thanks to a spacious and versatile interior. Even so, you get the benefits of a subcompact like fuel economy and maneuverability. The CX-3 will stand out wherever you go with its rich body contours, blacked-out D-pillars, and KODO Soul of Motion design. Mazda has clearly captured the essence of a predator about to spring into motion with the CX-3’s exterior, complete with signature KODO Design headlamps. Inside, you will be treated to a driver-centric cabin that lets you clearly see out of every window to reduce blind spots.

The interior of the Mazda CX-3 seems futuristic with its full-color display screen and carefully designed analog dials. Every CX-3 has MAZDA CONNECT as standard for connectivity, entertainment, and more. The clean lines help contribute to the modern feel of this vehicle. You will not only be comfortable wherever the CX-3 takes you, but confident as well with i-ACTIV AWD. This available system constantly monitors conditions to adjust the power delivery and provide maximum traction at all times no matter where you are driving. It responds instantly, detecting and correcting potential slippage before you even notice anything has happened.

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 Compared to Previous Models

If you remember correctly, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 was actually the very first model year of this SUV. As such, the subcompact CX-3 does not change very much for the 2017 version since Mazda already created the vehicle they wanted with the previous model year. This means that you have the same overall styling, powertrains, transmissions, trims, and more.

There are still a few minor differences between the 2016 and 2017 CX-3 depending on the trim level that you choose. While 18-inch wheels were only offered on the top Grand Touring trim for 2016, the 2017 CX-3 also has these large, commanding wheels on the Touring. You will also notice that the i-ACTIVSENSE safety package has decreased in price.

You still get the same additional features from this package, including Smart Brake Support System, Collision Warning, Automatic On/Off Headlights, High Beam Control, Rain Sensing Windshield Wipers, Lane Departure Warning, Smart City Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control complete with Close Proximity Warning, and a Distance Recognition Support System.

Understanding the CX-3 History

The Mazda CX-3 has a very short history, as it was only introduced for the 2016 model year. Before that, it made its debut during the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2014 followed by the Mazda CX-3 Racing Concept during the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon and the Detroit Auto Show of the same year. It is based on the same platform found on Mazda’s other subcompact, the Mazda2.

People who are looking for a comparison will see that the CX-3 measures 9.6 inches less in length than the CX-5. Compared to the other crossovers in the Mazda lineup, the CX-3 also has a slightly more aggressive appearance that gives it a sportier feel and helps attract young buyers, the main demographic interested in subcompact SUVs.

The CX-3 can seat five passengers and has a versatile interior with rear folding seats for up to 42.3 cubic feet of cargo. The 2016 Mazda CX-3 came standard with the MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system with its 7-inch touchscreen, internet radio, and a range of connectivity options. It used a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with 146 horsepower and the choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive along with a 6-speed automatic.
