Mazda CX-5: The Perfect Size Crossover SUV

The Mazda CX-5 is ideally sized, right in the middle of the crossover SUV lineup from Mazda, appealing to those who don’t want a vehicle that is too large or too small. The CX-5 has a spacious interior that you can stretch out in, paired with the versatility you expect from an SUV. The interior also hosts a driver-centric cabin that puts everything within reach and lets you concentrate on the “joy of driving,” one of the focuses of this SUV’s design. The Active Driving Display gives you relevant information at a glance, while the Commander control knob gives you new ways to adjust controls and navigate the display. The cabin is also incredibly quiet thanks to enhanced sound deadening so you can better appreciate the available Bose sound system.

Looking at the CX-5 will show you the familiar KODO Soul of Motion design language from Mazda which captures the feeling of movement even when this vehicle is standing still. Mazda craftsmen took their time modeling the CX-5, including creating a life-sized version from clay before they were satisfied with the result – and with the eye-catching style and aerodynamics, it shows. Another area the Mazda CX-5 excels in is safety, with a range of available i-ACTIVSENSE driver assistive features that protect you at every turn and optional predictive i-ACTIV AWD.

What Was Updated for the 2017 Mazda CX-5?

Following a 2016.5 model year, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is all-new. You will notice changes to the exterior right from the start with a more angular appearance instead of its formerly roundish one. The grille now has a mesh pattern instead of horizontal bars, and the headlights have gotten slimmer. One seemingly minor update for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is actually anything but small: Mazda created a new exterior color, Soul Red Crystal that shows just how far paint advances have come. This color shows off luster, richness, and depth with a three-layer paint process involving a metallic coat, a red coat, and a clear coat. The result is a shade of red that manipulates the light to create a feeling of movement.

Get to Know the Mazda CX-5 History

Compared to some other models on the road, the Mazda CX-5 has a relatively short history. The automaker introduced this sport crossover SUV in 2013 with its bold body design and modern, attractive interior. The CX-5 stood out from the competition with its available upgrades and options. It came with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine that generated 155 horsepower, and included features like Bluetooth, navigation, Bose sound, HD radio, and a range of safety features. For 2014, Mazda added an available 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and similar technology to the existing powertrain.

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 top trims, the Touring and Grand Touring, received push button start and keyless entry as additions to their list of standard features. The 2016 model year version was mildly refreshed to include adjustments to the exterior styling and a more refined interior. The most obvious of these adjustments were new taillights and a new grille, along with a new sound system. The 2016 CX-5 was also more comfortable thanks to a revised suspension and new front seats. A 2016.5 version added a standard rearview camera on all but the Sport trim, as well as a manual transmission, and lengthened standard features for the top two trims.
