Fitting a ridgid hardtop into a space just big enough for a folding cloth-top is about as easy as pouring a large jug of water into a smaller one. But that’s exactly what our engineers accomplished with the 2017 MX-5 RF. After considering several methods, some as dramatic as splitting the roof into seven parts, they came up with a functional yet beautiful solution. Ultimately, they perfected the delicate dance between open air and secure cabin, getting it down to a mere 13 seconds.

Mazda's Signature Machine Gray Metallic

Mazda's Signature Machine Gray Metallic

Like the Machine Gray Metallic 2016 Mazda CX-9, the RF looks as if it’s machined from a solid piece of steel. It starts with a black primer coat that’s covered with a precisely sprayed layer of aluminum silver paint. The process is highly controlled to ensure the aluminum paint flakes fall into a pattern parallel with the body panels. This gives the black and silver hues more luminosity and a liquid reflective quality. Lastly, layers of gray-tinted and colorless clear coating are applied to top off our most premium color yet.

A Truly Connected Drive

A Truly Connected Drive

Imagine an archer on horseback, riding toward a target. He inhales and exhales in perfect harmony with his horse’s gait. The horse steadies as the archer pulls back his arrow. Perfect shot. This relationship between horse and rider is called Jinba Ittai. It’s a 900-year-old Japanese tradition, but it’s more important to us now than ever. We strive to engineer this connection into each and every one of our cars. The RF, being a true driver’s car, is certainly no exception.

1 MSRP excludes tax, title, license fees and destination charge of $875 (Alaska $920). Model shown priced higher. Actual dealer price will vary.
